CALL TO ORDER

Chair Thomae called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m.

CALL TO AUDIENCE - At this time, any member of the public is allowed to address the Commission on any issue not listed on today's agenda. Pursuant to the Arizona Open Meeting Law, individual Commission Members may ask Town staff to review the matter, ask that the matter be placed on a future agenda, or respond to criticism made by speakers.  However, the Historic Preservation Commission may not discuss or take legal action matters raised during "Call to the Audience." In order to speak during "Call to Audience" please specify what you wish to discuss when completing the blue speaker card.

Educational opportunities for Historic Preservation Commission members to attend   


May 2018 Educational Opportunities

Ms. Dellerman explained that season is about to close but there are still educational items to attend. She also reminded the Commissioners of the conference in June.

Vice-Chair Ohlson re-organized the Agenda as follows: Regular Agenda item #2 would be heard first followed by items #1, #3-#7 respectively.

REPORT BY COMMISSIONER DAN HUFF ON STATUS OF ESSAY CONTEST (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Commissioner Huff handed out awards to the winners of the essay contest. The Commissioners thanked the participants and photos were taken.

UPDATE FROM THE ORO VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Paul Loomis treasurer of Historical Society, informed the Commission of the newly elected officers and mentioned that they are still seeking a president.  He described the Society's presence at the Celebrate Oro Valley event at Steam Pump Ranch. The Historical Society provided tours and booths two days of the three day event.

DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION OF ASSIGNING COMMISSIONER(S) THE TASK OF INVESTIGATING WHAT OTHER COMMUNITIES OF OUR SIZE ARE DOING IN HISTORIC PRESERVATION


Vice Chair Ohson indicated that other jurisdictions share similar processes of Historic Preservation as Oro Valley.  It was suggested that a Commissioner pick a city and investigate their means of historic preservation. Vice Chair Ohlson asked that the Commissioners wait to assign tasks until the new Commissioners have an opportunity to attend the meetings.

DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON ASSIGNING COMMISSIONER(S) THE TASK OF INVESTIGATING HOW TO INCREASE PUBLIC AWARENESS AT STEAMP PUMP RANCH


Commissioner Biel provided his idea that we release upcoming events on social media, possibly build a group on Facebook or other medium.  Ms. Dellerman offered the use of our Parks & Recreation Facebook page. Vice Chair Ohlson asked Commissioners for other ideas as to how the Commission can increase awareness at the Ranch. Comissioner Biel shared his experience on Facebook and his feedback.

REPORT BY LYNANNE DELLERMAN ON Celebrate Oro Valley Then & Now (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Ms. Dellerman described the three very successsful days during the Celebrate Oro Valley event that are tied to history.  She indicated that a few thousand people visited. She reported that historian architect Michael Fassett's presentation was very well received with over 80 people in attendance.

UPDATE BY LYNANNE DELLERMAN ON THE ORO VALLEY LOCAL REGISTRY OF ORO VALLEY COUNTRY CLUB ESTATES (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Ms. Dellerman reported that the intern from the U of A will be providing his study and report to his instructor.  It was requested by a Commissioner that the intern provide his presentation to the Commissioners at the next meeting.

DEPARTMENT REPORT (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Ms. Dellerman reported that a formal request has been made by Commissioner member Dan Karlsberg to withdraw from the Commission.  She indicated that two new applicants have been selected.  The status of the window signage was presented. The painting schedule was put on hold for the Celebrate Oro Valley event. Ms. Dellerman continued with her report about the future plans of caretaking, rehabilitation, and restoration at the Ranch.

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS - (The Historic Preservation Commission may bring forth general topics for future meeting agendas. Discussion must be limited to information and clarification). Next Historic Preservation Commission meeting tentatively scheduled for Monday, June 4, 2018 to begin at 5:00 p.m.

MOTION: A motion was made by Vice Chair Ohlson and seconded by Commissioner Huff to accept Revisit and discuss the 2.5 Square Mile report.
Discuss how to manage and schedule the writing contest for next year.
Discuss assigning Commissioners the task of investigating what other communities are doing in historic preservation.
