Kristy Diaz-Trahan, Parks & Recreation Director, explained part of the capital improvement funding for the Steam Pump Ranch Master Plan included stabilization and mitigation of the land. A planting plan was requested by the Commission and McGann and Associates were hired to design the plan. Ms. Diaz-Trahan explained that before a plan can be executed, management of the land, discovery of where water flows and settles, and a possible irrigation system must be addressed. The intent of the presentation is for the Commission to review and possibly recommend it pass as part of the easement agreement with Pima County.
MOTION: A motion was made by Commissioner Ohlson and seconded by Commissioner Huff to approve design and concept of the Planting Plan presented by McGann and Associates.

Chair Lane reviewed excerpts from the Rock Art and the Oro Valley Cultural Heritage Preservation Plan. Each Commissioner addressed areas of interest which they sought as priority. The priorities selected for implementation include focus on the Proctor Leiber House and establishing processes and procedures for identifying historic neighborhoods.

REPORT AND DISCUSSION ON THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OUTREACH EFFORTS’ WRITING CONTEST BY CHAIR LANE |
Chair Lane noted that the quality of essays were improved over last year and individual reflections offered for better essays. Twenty-nine essays were submitted. Placing the writing contest on a future agenda with the possibility of holding the contest in the fall was discussed.
Commission awarded two first place winners. A binder containing the essays will be placed in the library.
Commissioner Ohlson attended the Historical Society meeting and delivered a synopsis of the material covering the Apaches, mining, and the cattle era. He also indicated that future topics could be tailored to specific audiences so work can be done in conjunction with the Historical Society given that they have an abundance of resources.
Ms. Diaz-Trahan reaffirmed the request for a written department report. She reported that the budget process included grant match funding for an internship. She also clarified the funding for Steam Pump Ranch indicating that there are no capital improvement projects identified for next fiscal year. However, funds are allocated for five year capital improvement projects for specific needs.
Chair Lane reiterated that the priorities that were previously discussed will be on the next agenda. Ms. Diaz-Trahan reminded the Commission of the guest speaker from Tohono O'Odham.
