ANNUAL REPORT PRESENTATION BY COMMISSIONER DAN HUFF (DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION)


MOTION: A motion was made by Commissioner Sunshine and seconded by Commissioner Thomae to approve the Annual Report as written

UPDATE ON THE ORO VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Mr. Jim Williams, President of the Oro Valley Historical Society informed the Commission of upcoming activities and the Speaker Series.  In addition, he mentioned that a collections committee will feature one object each Saturday at Steam Pump Ranch. He also described that someone in the Historical Society found boundary markers that are of significant value. Mr. Williams showed photos explaining how the markers can be viewed as an example of saving history in the area.

DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE WILLIAM ADLER HISTORICAL WRITING EXPOSITORY CONTEST ESSAY QUESTIONS


Ms. Dellerman informed the Commission that the teachers have requested the questions be made simpler and to have the due date before rodeo break, Feb 1, 2017. Oro Valley staff met with a curriculum writer and adjustments to the essay questions were made. Commissioners discussed the importance of keeping the essay interesting to all amphi students, each essay question was analyzed. The Commissioners discussed whether the essay questions met core curriculum requirements. Chair Thomae moved to table the questions until further information regarding core curriculum can be provided.

MOTION: A motion was made by Commissioner Thomae and seconded by Vice Chair Ohlson to table the essay questions until further information regarding core curriculum can be provided and to have Commissioner Sunshine work with someone in the education field, provided by Ms. Dellerman, to make sure the essay questions fit in with the core curriculum.

REPORT BY CHAIR THOMAE AND VICE CHAIR OHLSON ON THE HISTORIC PRESERVATON CONFERENCE (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Chair Thomae described the presentation he gave to the Conference at the Oro Valley Country Club.  Ms. Dellerman indicated the setting at the Oro Valley Country Club propelled firming a foundation for a local registry along with a relationship with University of Arizona students to create a project for next semester. The goal is to utilize this setting for the Oro Valley Then and Now presentation taking place April 13, 2018.

DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ANNUAL WORK PLAN


Possible suggestions included:
- ensure we follow OV Cultural Heritage Preservation Plan, including the stabilization and preservation of the historic core of Steam Pump Ranch
- continue to implement items from the Heritage Preservation Plan
- work on 2.5 Square Mile Oral History Project
- further a program for historic preservation of private residents and neighborhoods, including but not limited to OV Estates, by creating and completing a local registry list (assistance offered by University of Arizona Drachman Institute) 
- review Cultural Heritage Preservation Plan for uncompleted items

MOTION: A motion was made by Commissioner Huff and seconded by Vice Chair Ohlson to adopt annual work plan

7.

REPORT BY LYNANNE DELLERMAN ON STEAM PUMP RANCH MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS AND CHANGES (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Ms. Dellerman reported on:
- the success of the adobe workshop and future classes
- the ceiling repair at Pusch House
- the window signage that is in process by Town Of Oro Valley communications department

8.

DEPARTMENT REPORT (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Ms. Dellerman announced that we have a new Town Manager, Mary Jacobs.  She also informed the Commission that there has been an increase in requests for more field trips at Steam Pump Ranch. David Yubeta made a donation of light equipment and supplies to Steam Pump Ranch. 

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS - (The Historic Preservation Commission may bring forth general topics for future meeting agendas. Discussion must be limited to information and clarification). Next Historic Preservation Commission meeting tentatively scheduled for Monday, November 6, 2017 to begin at 5:00 p.m.


- obtain information about term limits and ability of former Commissioners to return and serve
- possible presentation on US survey maps and markers
- update on Commissioner vacancies
- final decision on next steps at SPR, Procter Leiber and fire suppression system
- review essay questions meeting core curriculum requirements
- begin working on creating a registry list as required by Certified Local Government (CLG)
