CALL TO ORDER

Chair Thomae called the meeting to order at 5:04 pm.

CALL TO AUDIENCE - At this time, any member of the public is allowed to address the Commission on any issue not listed on today’s agenda. Pursuant to the Arizona Open Meeting Law, individual Commission Members may ask Town staff to review the matter, ask that the matter be placed on a future agenda, or respond to criticism made by speakers.  However, the Historic Preservation Commission may not discuss or take legal action matters raised during "Call to the Audience." In order to speak during "Call to Audience" please specify what you wish to discuss when completing the blue speaker card.

Educational opportunities for Historic Preservation Commission members to attend


November Educational Opportunities

Ms. Dellerman reminded the Commissioners of the exciting events taking place in the coming months as well as tours of the Pusch House.  She described other activities for both kids and families at the Ranch.  Saturday, November 10, 2018, a Historical Society potluck will take place along with a presentation by Jim Williams. All proceeds will benefit the Historical Society.

REGULAR AGENDA

1.

UPDATE FROM THE ORO VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Roxie Johnson, President of the Historical Society, reminded the Commissioners of tours at the Pusch House.  She said a holiday sale will be held this weekend, November 10, 2018.  Ms. Dellerman informed the Commissioners of the Historical Society's new website.

INTRODUCE NEW COMMISSIONER MIKE WILSON


Chair Thomae asked new Commissioner Mike Wilson to provide a history about his interests and his background.  Chair Wilson said that he has previously worked with Ms. Dellerman and served on the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board. Ms. Dellerman indicated that Commissioner Wilson's knowledge of the Oro Valley Country Club will be beneficial to the Historic Preservation Commission. Commissioner Wilson declared that he is very interested in working again with the Town.

DISCUSSION ON CURRENT STATUS OF THE ANNUAL REPORT AS PRESENTED BY COMMISSIONER BOHEN (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Commissioner Bohen completed the annual report.  He provided Ms. Dellerman a copy.  It will be reviewed at the December meeting for approval.

DISCUSSION ON HOW THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY PROVIDES TOURS AT STEAM PUMP RANCH (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION )


Roxy Johnson, President of the Historic Society described the tour process that includes a scripted narration of the Pusch House.  With reservations a complete tour of the Ranch can be provided.  Staff are also available to offer tours of the heritage gardens and the hen house. Commissioners asked questions for clarification. Ms. Johnson clarified that some buildings are not accessable but can be viewed through the windows and receive information from signage.
Ms. Dellerman explained to the Commission that parties interested in tours on dates other than second Saturdays, must contact the Town, then the Historical Society typically takes the lead on organizing the tour. The Society then gathers the volunteers and prepares for the tours.

PRESENTATION ON FINAL ESSAY CONTEST QUESTIONS BY VICE CHAIR HUFF.  ESSAY QUESTIONS ARE PROVIDED IN WEBSITE LINK. (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Ms. Dellerman reported on the final wording of the essay questions.  The schools have been provided with the questions.

Marana Preservation Project websites

Commissioner Bohen explained some of the Marana websites that he investigated. Commissioners reviewed on line some of the sites he provided.  Ms. Dellerman reported that she is providing the Town's marketing group an update of the HPC status. Chair Thomae described his findings on the Scottsdale history website, including a flow chart, how they handle exterior modifications, and their involvement in their own history.  Commissioners asked questions regarding certificate of appropriateness. Commissioner Munden described Cave Creek's historical information which is quite limited

DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION TO APPROVE STEAM PUMP RANCH WORK REGARDING ADDITIONAL STABILIZATION WORK AS DEPICTED IN THE BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS

Ms. Dellerman described the photos as presented on the power point, of Steam Pump ranch successes.

8.

DEPARTMENT REPORT (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Ms. Dellerman informed the Commissioners that she met with the Deputy Director, Matt Jankowski and explained to him items at the ranch that need to be addressed. He offered support. She also indicated that an intern is interested in assisting with work on the HPC. Ms. Dellerman reported that she will be attending a National Historic Conference. She also reported many of the past events that took place at the Ranch and were well recieved by the public. Chair Thomae praised Ms. Dellerman on her efforts and success. She also reported on upcoming events at the Ranch and offered to provide email announcements.

9.

FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS - (The Historic Preservation Commission may bring forth general topics for future meeting agendas. Discussion must be limited to information and clarification). Next Historic Preservation Commission meeting tentatively scheduled for Monday, December 3, 2018 to begin at 5:00 p.m.


Chair Thomae  made a motion to include items below on the future agenda

1.  discuss possible remedies for the detioration at Carlos's house
2.  discuss how money made at the ranch stays at the ranch
3. discuss and possible action about the 13 registry applications
