CALL TO ORDER AT OR AFTER 6:00 PM

Chair Wade called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

REVIEW AND/OR APPROVAL OF THE JUNE 21, 2016 REGULAR SESSION MINUTES


MOTION: A motion was made by Member Danker and seconded by Member Guyer to approve June 21, 2016 minutes as written.

MOTION carried, 7-0.

BOARD REPORT (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION) - ARIZONA PARKS AND RECREATION ASSOCIATION (APRA) CONFERENCE


Member Carle was the only attendee from the Parks and Recreation Board Advisory Board. He gave an overview of the conference and provided highlights of the different speakers and topics including open meeting law, volunteering and sustainability.

UPDATE AND DISCUSSION ON THE NEW "I CAN, TOO" PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH WITH SPECIAL NEEDS


Community members have been asking for programs for their special needs kids. A group met with Kristy Diaz-Trahan, Parks and Recreation Director and Interim Town Manager, Danny Sharp in June, asking how we can work together and brought special needs specialists with them. Through working with them, the Parks and Recreation Department has launched the "I Can, too" programs which started this summer. Ms. Diaz-Trahan reviewed the programs were are now offering in our program guide.

4.

FURTHER DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON INSTALLING SWINGS AT RIVERFRONT PARK


Ms. Diaz-Trahan asked for a reconsideration from the board on the topic of the installation of swings at Riverfront Park per the request of Town Council. The board had previously voted against the installation. A new location within the park was identified and Ms. Diaz-Trahan explained the reasoning and benefits of that location. Discussion ensued among the board and members voiced their concerns.

MOTION: A motion was made by Member Guyer and seconded by Member Overton to accept the recommendation of installing the swings in the dirt lot between the Big Horn ramada and existing play structure.

MOTION carried, 6-1 with Member Danker opposed.

5.

COMMUNITY CENTER ADVISORY GROUP UPDATE


A new group has been formed for the community center with the intent of the group to help guide decisions, communicate to membership and provide feeback. Troon is leading the group of seven members representing fitness, tennis, golf and the restaurant. Member Danker is part of the group and presented information from the first meeting on August 15, 2016. The meeting was an introduction and discussion how to make the community center better. Youth representation from the Youth Advisory Council was suggested.

6.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT (DISCUSSION MUST BE LIMITED TO INFORMATION AND CLARIFICATION)


Ms. Diaz-Trahan provided the following updates:
-The Greenock Trail project is ongoing
-Staff is working closely with Pima County on the CDO shared path for signage throughout the areas located in Oro Valley
-Staff is working on an overall sign inventory on all trails to identify what we have and rate the conditions of the signs
-We have secured an additional $10K from Game and Fish to add more shade structure on the archery range
-We have submitted another grant to Arizona State Parks for Honeybee trail repair and signage
-Pima County is emulating our GIS mapping regarding the loop trail, including artwork
-The overseeding schedule of parks was distributed
-The program guide and its new features were reviewed
